In 1817, perhaps inspired by the Erie Canal,
businessmen proposed digging a canal to connect the
Connecticut and Merrimack rivers -- beginning with the
Sugar River, and using its source, Lake Sunapee, as a
reservoir.
But the river was recognized as central to industrial
development, and in 1820, mill owners from Claremont,
Sunapee, and Newport united to create the Sunapee Dam
Corporation, which built a dam to regulate the Sugar
River's flow, running mill machinery even during
drought. This plan worked, and over 120 water wheels
would turn along the stream's course. One mill was the
Dorr Woolen Mill, established in 1867, which
manufactured fine woolen cloth for Pendleton Woolen
Mills.
Today, we lease from Sturm Ruger Firearms, who
purchased the building in 2002. "We spent a great
deal of time, effort and money to refurbish the former Dorr Woolen facility adjacent to our plant in Newport to
become a state-of-the-art titanium precision investment
casting foundry, which we now believe to be the fourth
largest such facility in the world," said Bill
Ruger Jr., company chairman and CEO.

Our Corporate Office
|
| Built in 1830 and purchased by Sugar River Outfitters/Fletcher
ltd., in 1999. At the turn of the century, affluent
city-dwellers packed up their households and traveled by steam
train spending the entire summer in Georges Mills because of its
spectacular scenery, pristine lakes and abundant recreational
opportunities. It has been rumored that our little piece of
earth, has been frequented by many steam train captains, both
physical and spiritual.
